Staghills Nursery School

A place where children lead the learning

Classroom under the sky

We use the outdoors as our 'Classroom Under the Sky', which is roofed only by the clouds!

It acts as an outdoor classroom where children can explore, investigate and discover the natural environment, alongside developing their language and gaining first-hand learning experiences. It provides a valuable teaching tool for teaching and learning in all curriculum areas.

Our 'Classroom Under the Sky' uses the Forest School Principles, interwoven with our own visions and values and beliefs about how our children learn.

Relationships

“No significant learning occurs without a significant relationship.”

James Comer

Materials

“The most effective kind of education is that a child should play amongst lovely things.”
Plato

Space

“Outdoors should be a dynamic, flexible and versatile place where children can choose, create, change and be in charge of their play environment.”
Jan White

Time

“Children have their own agendas and timescales. As they find out more about their world and their place in it, they work hard not to let adults hurry them.”
Cathy Nutbrown

The best and the richest cupboard is roofed only by the sky.

Margaret McMillan (c1925)

Children’s basic needs for well being and involvement, and their urge to explore and make sense of their world is developed though high quality play/inquiry in an outdoor environment.
