Hazel, the tree of wisdom and learning, adds its strength to the bright fire burning

We have chosen the room names carefully and have been influenced by our ethos and commitment to outdoor learning and connections to nature.

The environment as the third teacher

We believe the physical environment of the classrooms  reflects identity, purpose, engagement, and communication. We use a wide range of materials to encourage exploration and investigation.

Our environment is a warm, welcoming and exciting place for children, parents and educators. In every area, interesting objects and activities invite closer observation and deeper thinking. Each key group has their own 'home' area but can access all parts of the learning environment every session.

This year we are developing bases where children can really focus and explore using a range of media .Children work in small groups with their key person exploring a range of possibilities using the resources. The teachers work with children while they conduct complex individual or small-group tasks over a period of several days or weeks. Teachers start with the children’s interests and purposely include certain materials or experiences related to it as jumping off points.

Our task is to construct educational situations that we
propose to the children allowing them to lead their own learning.

To us the image of the child means… Children are viewed as competent, curious, full of knowledge, potential, and interested in connecting to the world around them. Teachers are deeply aware of children’s potentials and construct all of their work and environment of the children’s experience to respond appropriately.
